Jet Blue Airways Terminal 5, JFK Airport

Impact Environmental working as a subcontractor to Scalamandre Construction performed the testing, transport and off-site disposal (beneficial use) of over 200,000 cubic yards of soil from John F. Kennedy International Airport. The soil was removed to complete the new JetBlue Terminal 5 (formerly TWA).

The soil removed for the project was a homogeneous fine sand that extends down from the surface (below tarmac) to a depth that ranges from 7 to 16 feet. In 1929, the sand was pumped into the site from Jamaica Bay to fill in the tidal marshlands that predated the site's use as a commercial airport. Working with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Impact Environmental was successful in engineering beneficial uses for recycling some of the sand that reduced disposal costs. This project serves as a testimonial for the value recycling can offer developers, both private and public.
